Common Myths About Therapy and Coaching Debunked from a Psychotherapist and Life Coach in Ireland

In the world of mental health and personal development, therapy and life coaching are powerful tools that can catalyse profound change. However, despite their benefits, there’s a lot of misinformation and myths surrounding these practices. As a professional Psychotherapist and Life Coach in Ireland, I want to help clear the air and debunk some of these common myths. Whether you’re considering reaching out to a therapist or a life coach in Ireland, understanding the truth can empower you to make informed decisions.

Myth 1: Therapy and Coaching Are for ‘Weak’ People

One of the most pervasive myths is that seeking therapy or coaching is a sign of weakness. In reality, reaching out for support is a courageous decision. It shows a commitment to personal growth and well-being. Whether you’re seeking therapy to navigate mental health challenges or engaging with a life coach in Ireland to achieve your personal or professional goals, asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.

Myth 2: Therapy Is Only for People with Serious Mental Health Issues

Another misconception is that therapy is only for those experiencing severe mental health problems. While therapy is indeed crucial for individuals managing conditions like depression or anxiety, it’s also beneficial for anyone seeking to improve their emotional well-being, process life changes, or gain deeper self-understanding. Everyone can benefit from the supportive, non-judgmental space that therapy provides.

Myth 3: Coaching Is Like Having Someone Tell You What to Do

Some believe that life coaching is about receiving advice or instructions from a so-called “expert.” However, effective coaching is about partnership. As a psychotherapist and life coach in Ireland, I will work with you to explore your thoughts, uncover your goals, and develop strategies to achieve them. My coaching empowers you to discover your own solutions and take actionable steps towards the life you envision.

Myth 4: You’ll Be in Therapy or Coaching Forever

Many worry that starting therapy or coaching means committing to a lengthy process. In truth, the duration depends on your individual needs and goals. While some may benefit from ongoing support, others might achieve their objectives through a set number of sessions. Both therapy and coaching are flexible and can be tailored to fit your unique situation.

Myth 6: You Can’t Have Both Therapy and Coaching

Some people think they must choose between therapy and coaching, but as a Psychotherapist and Life Coach in Ireland, I can assure you that they can complement each other effectively and this is why I have designed Psychotherapeutic Coaching. Therapy often focuses on healing and understanding, while coaching is future-oriented, emphasising goal-setting and personal growth. Integrating both can provide a holistic approach to your well-being.

Making the decision to seek therapy or enlist the help of a therapist or life coach in Ireland can be transformative.

  • Embracing Sensitivity

    Embracing Sensitivity

Embracing Sensitivity: Turning a Perceived Weakness into a Strength

As a psychotherapist in Ireland, I often work with clients who label themselves as “too sensitive.” Society tends to view sensitivity as a weakness, something to manage or overcome. Yet, from my vantage point, sensitivity is not only natural but also incredibly beneficial. It’s time we shifted our perspective and started seeing sensitivity for what it truly is: a strength.

    Understanding Sensitivity

Sensitive individuals often experience emotions more deeply and are highly attuned to their environment and the feelings of others. This heightened awareness can sometimes leave them feeling overwhelmed or vulnerable. But sensitivity is a double-edged sword, it’s also the source of many strengths, such as empathy, creativity and intuition.

    The Strength in Sensitivity

    1. Empathy and Emotional Intelligence: Sensitive individuals tend to have a remarkable capacity for empathy. They connect with others on a profound emotional level, which enhances their ability to support and understand those around them. This skill is invaluable in building strong, compassionate relationships in both personal and professional settings.
    2. Heightened Creativity: Sensitivity often comes hand-in-hand with creativity and imagination. Sensitive people frequently have an artistic soul, harnessing their deep emotions to create and inspire. This creativity can lead to innovative problem-solving, insightful ideas and original projects.
    3. Intuition and Insight: The sensitivity that makes someone keenly aware of subtle cues from their surroundings can also enhance their intuition. This ability to “read between the lines” often provides invaluable insights and enhances decision-making abilities.

    Navigating Sensitivity: Practical Strategies

Being sensitive in a world that sometimes feels indifferent can be challenging. Here are a few strategies to help navigate and harness your sensitivity:

    1. Self-Compassion: Practice being kind to yourself by acknowledging your emotions without judgment. Recognising that your sensitivity is a part of who you are can help foster self-acceptance.
    2. Boundaries are Key: Setting healthy boundaries is crucial to protect your emotional well-being and prevent overwhelm. This includes taking time for solitude and self-care when needed.
    3. Mindfulness Practices: Techniques such as meditation and mindful breathing can help manage overwhelming emotions and maintain emotional balance.
    4. Channel Sensitivity into Passion Projects: Use your sensitivity-driven creativity to engage in activities that bring joy and purpose, whether through art, writing, or volunteer work.

Let’s change the narrative around sensitivity. It does not equate to weakness; rather, it is a part of a rich tapestry that can lead to profound insights and connections. Embracing your sensitivity can open doors to personal growth and resilience. In doing so, not only do you enrich your own life, but you also profoundly impact those around you.

Being sensitive is beautiful. Celebrate it. Cherish it. Let it be the guide to your inner strength.

  • Dealing with Anxiety

    Dealing with Anxiety

Dealing with anxiety can be incredibly difficult. Excessive and intrusive thoughts, rumination and focusing on “what ifs” can all contribute towards anxiety. We might feel alone in our anxiety and fearful of speaking about it with others. But anxiety is incredibly common. ⁣

Here are 3 signs that you’re dealing with anxiety:
    ⁣
    𝟏. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬⁣
We can all have restless nights but sometimes this can become excessive and even wake ourselves up with anxiety and worry. We can struggle with getting back to sleep and suffer from panic and worry.
    ⁣
    𝟐. 𝐓𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡⁣
Physical signs of anxiety such as tightness in your chest, a racing heart, shortness of breath and tingling in your hands and arms can all be incredibly frightening. The more we focus on these sensations, the worse they feel, increasing anxiety. ⁣
    ⁣
    𝟑. 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞⁣
Withdrawing from others and being fearful of social situations are common when feeling on edge. We can cancel plans, avoid calls etc. When we isolate ourselves, we can feel even more on edge. ⁣
    ⁣
If you have experienced any of these feelings, remember that you are not alone. Anxiety is incredibly common. I understand that it can sometimes feel hopeless but I promise you that you can overcome its grip on you.

I want to help you and support you through this journey. Let’s work together to understand your anxiety, your triggers and how it manifests for you. • Confidence

    Confidence

Do you feel confident or do you think that confidence is for other people?

In this article I explore confidence and a great conversation I had via Instagram Live.

This week I had a wonderful conversation with Karen McCarthy of The Simplified Social Media to explore this idea. Karen is an incredible mentor and coach as well as being a wonderful human being.  I was delighted to join her to discuss confidence in business. You can watch the discussion here.

As Karen said “I have been in business for over 8 years now and one lesson I’ve learned over and over again is that if you don’t do the mindset work and learn how to build your confidence you will struggle to grow your business”

You see the main ingredient for any kind of success is changing your mindset and working on your confidence.  Although our conversation was centered on business, mindset and confidence applies to all areas of your life.

For many of us we simply don’t believe in ourselves and we don’t believe that we can achieve our goal or succeed. We think confidence is something that happens to other people. We also believe that we can ignore our mindset obstacles and carry on regardless. The truth is that this will only work for so long.

Take a moment now to think about your confidence levels. Do you believe in your abilities and talents? Do you believe in your ability to make that something you’re striving for happen? If you haven’t answered yes to both of these questions then you will have a problem with your confidence.

The good news is confidence can be learned and your mindset obstacles can be overcome. I want to help you do just that. You can book your session with me here.

  • Here’s why your goals aren’t working out for you

Here’s why your goals aren’t working out for you

Tired of setting goals but not achieving them? I get it. We’ve all been there, we’ve set a goal and then felt disappointed when it didn’t work out. We may have even been put off setting another one and now believe that we are incapable of achieving goals.

If you’ve been in this position, don’t worry this doesn’t mean that you are failing, it just means there are some things to work on.

Here are 3 reasons your goals aren’t working

    1. They are not challenging you

Your goals need to challenge you.  You need to work towards them.  If they were easy and something you already had, then they wouldn’t be goals

    2. They aren’t attainable

Now I like to say that we can do anything we set our mind to which is true but there are also limitations.  For example, I might want to be a rocket scientist but without having a strong grasp of advanced maths, it probably won’t happen. You need to make sure that your goals are attainable, realistic and have specifics.  Let’s say you want to earn a degree, you need to be clear on what that degree is.

    3. The words you are using to describe yourself are negative

Negative self-descriptions can contribute to self-doubt, anxiety and limiting beliefs that hinder our personal development and our ability to reach our fullest potential. Our words control our attention and our emotions and thus can impact our goals and what we want to achieve in life.

I want to help you get crystal clear about your goals and set about for success.
